Willi Nowak

Name: Nowak
Vorname: Willi
Lebensdaten: (Mnisek Udobrise, 1886 - Prague, 1977)
Zu Leben und Werk: In the early decades of the twentieth century one of the most active centers of graphic art was Czechoslovakia. The etchings, woodcuts and lithographs of Max Svabinsky (1873-1962) helped to direct world attention to Prague. Svabinsky also founded and directed the Print Department at the Prague Academy, insuring that rising artists (such as Mucha in the preceding generation) would not have to go to Paris or elsewhere to develop their talents. Czech students of Svabinsky were now sought after for international commissions. In the 1920's, for example both T. F. Simon and Preissig were regularly employed by New York publishers. A student of Svabinsky in Prague, Willi Nowak also studied art in Munich and Holland. Particularly well known for his delicate landscapes and figure studies, Nowak's lithographs and paintings were exhibited in Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Prague during the 1920's and 1930's. Willi Nowak was also a Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Prague. A large selection of his art is now housed in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Prague. Girl with Apples ranks as one of Willi Nowak's most gifted works. The soft color modulations of yellows, blues and rose tones are handled with remarkable skill.
